International Day of People with a Disability 2019 - 'Not Me'

As another International Day of People with a Disability comes to a close I’d like to celebrate my favourite people with disabilities.

I am a huge fan of the politician Jordan Steele-John. I really admire how Jordan has served his constituents while simultaneously promoting the rights of people with disabilities. I one day hope to follow in his wheel treads but for Labor instead of the Greens.

Another person I admire is Dylan Alcott because he has broken down many barriers in the sporting world and the television world. He was the first person with a disability to win a Logie ... beating me to the punch.

I also admire all my fellow actors on the Performers with Disabilities Committee of the Media and Arts Alliance. May we all continue to work towards true representation of people with disabilities in the media.

While I think it is good to have a day celebrating people with disabilities, I look forward to the day when it is no longer necessary because my disability is not me.



Not Me

I act, I write, and I motivate.
My disability is what you see
But it is not me. 

I play music, I party, and long to be free. 
I am more than my disability
Because it is not me. 

I am a husband, a friend, and a so-called expert in sexuality.
Would it be the same if you took away my disability?
Because it is not me. 

I am a son, a brother, and an uncle.
Remember all these things when you see the disability
Because it is not me.

More Than Politics

 Every election our vote is about more than politics; it says I am part of this nation and my voice will be heard.  This election is about Team Australia. Which leader has a plan to build Australia's future and who wants to divide us? This election is about more than politics; it is about stable leadership. It is about aiming high, looking forward, and thinking big.  My life has been about disability rights. I am living proof that disability rights is more than politics and this election people with disabilities' votes matter.  If I was American I would die. Medicare is the envy of the world. No less than two American presidents have tried to bring in an Australian Medicare style system. A Vision for an Inclusive Australia (DRC Final Report)

 The final revised version of the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) into violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation was published on 2 November 2023.  The Royal Commission ran for four years with hundreds of people with disabilities testifying at hearings and thousands more supplying the Commission with written submissions.  The final report titled Our Vision for An Inclusive Australia  made 222 recommendations to improve laws, policies, structures, and practices to ensure a more inclusive and just society.
